This course will give a comprehensive overview of the policies, instruments
and actors involved in shaping the EU’s external economic relations. We
will look at the different dimensions of EU trade policy, its position
within the global trade architecture, recent developments and strategic
outlook.
The central objective is to deepen the participants’ understanding of the
basic principles, mechanisms, procedures of the EU’s Common Commercial
Policy (CCP) and to increase their awareness with regard to recent
strategic initiatives.
The training will consist of presentations, case studies, practical
exercises and discussions aiming to highlight the underlying developments,
objectives and policies associated with the EU’s external economic
relations. We will take a particular look into the interplay between
foreign and domestic policy in external economic relations; geopolitical
competition in the governance of the global trade regime; and the EU’s
response to current strategic challenges. Specific attention will be given
to the EU’s changing relations with China as a “negotiation partner, an
economic competitor and a systemic rival”.
