Introduction to EU data protection and privacy law

Over the last few years, digital technologies have transformed the economy and society. This affects all sectors of activity (including public sector) and the daily lives of all Europeans. Collecting and processing data – as you may probably imagine - is at the centre of this transformation. And more is yet to come!

Government-to-business, business-to-business and business-to-Government data-sharing promises significant benefits for the individuals and society as a whole. However, the risks and the responsibilities of the actors involved should not be overlooked. The public bodies have the responsibility to protect the personal data entrusted to them by the individuals. Especially, because such individuals often have little or no choice over whether and how their data will be processed.

This course has been specifically designed for you, the Next Generation European civil servants, working on data protection matters. The course tackle the essential concept of data protection, such the Core Data Protection Principles, the Roles of Different Actors in the Data Protection Field, the Rights of the Data Subject and One Stop Shop Mechanism
